The N.W.S.C launched it's 2011 tour last night at Rosy's Skate park in Derry. There was a great turn out and plenty of new members joining the club. The tour's first comp is in Strandhill Co. Sligo on May 21st and will be run in conjunction with our friends at the County Sligo Surf Club.

NWSC Surfers make finals at Portrush Open.

North West Surf Club members Kieron Scullion and Iain Gilmour made the finals of the Senior and Master's Divisions at the Portrush Open that took place on 9th April at West Strand, Portrush.

The event was the 3rd event on this year's ISA Championship tour. Kieron who has battled back from a serious leg break placed 4th in the Senior Men's Final, and Iain finished 3rd in the Master's Division. Both guys surfed well in the small conditions and it is great to see our club's surfers making finals at a National level.CONGRATULATIONS!!

The Irish Surfing Association will be hosting Eurosurf 2011 from the 23rd September to the 2nd October in Bundoran Co Donegal.

We are looking for volunteers to join our event Management Committee. Some of the roles will require specific skills and/or previous international event management experience, others will not require any specific skills or experience.

If you can commit your time or expertise to the event preparations and/ or the running of the event we hope you can attend our first Management Committee meeting scheduled to take place from 5- 8pm on Saturday 29th January at the Allingham Arms Hotel in Bundoran.

All volunteers welcome.

The 4th annual Wildstyle comp and the 3rd and final event on the NWSC Mini tour was run off in clean 2-3ft surf at Culdaff yesterday.

A large turnout of competitors and supporters where there to see some high quality surfing.

The day started out with running the 2 semi finals and Final of the'Clash of the Clubs' contest that had to be postponed in Portrush due to dropping swell cnditions.
The final was a tight affair with Rosy Harkin the NWSC's only surfer in the final.He was up against Jim Lenfesty and Oisin Cambell from the Causeway Club and tour leader Gearoid Mcdaid from Strandhill in Sligo.
However it was Jim Lenfesty and Gearoid Mcdaid who battled it out with the young ripper taking out Lenfesty with two solid big scoring waves.

After the final of the Clash Of The Clubs it was the Wildstyle comp that got underway, the 1st rounds were all a tightly fought affair with the youngsters making there mark again taking out the older competitors in the comp.

The final had 3 surfers under 18! Aaron Dees, Oisin Cambell and Gearoid Mcdaid with Portrush local Jim Lenfesty the only senior surfer making it to the final.
Oisin Cambell and Jim Lenfesty both started well scoring highly on there waves with Cambell pulling off a massive floater. Aaron Dees caught one or two nice lefts and carved some nice cutbacks while young Gearoid Mcdaid stayed over on the lefts getting a few nice ones too. But it wasn't till the final 2 minutes that Gearoid pulled the best wave of the day out of the bag, scoring 8.5 with two of the judges after demolishing the wave with 3 big of the lips and two full roundhouse cutbacks. The crowd went ballistic and the hooter sounded to finish off another great Wildstyle event.

The club would like to thank all the competitors who travelled to the comps from as far as Sligo and Belfast. We'd also like to thank Rosy SurfnSkate for there continuing support of the club and its events.

Clash Of The Clubs

The 2nd event in the NWSC mini tour, The Clash of The Clubs was postponed last Saturday 6th November at the semi final stage as the swell had fallen off completely at Whiterocks in Portrush.

The two Semi finals and final will be held this Saturday 13th Novemeber at Culdaff before the start of the Wildstyle comp. The first heat will hit the water at 9.30 am sharp.

After which the 1st round of the WILDSTYLE comp will start, please sign in at 9.30 as usual as we will have a lot of heats to get through in the day.

The prize givng for both events and the Tour and Club champion trophies will be presented in McGrory's pub in Culdaff after the comp has finished.

The forecast for this weekend is for good size surf at the moment.

Cold water classic goes off in great waves!

The 1st event in the NWSC's mini tour 'The Cold Water Classic' sponsored by Adventure One Surf School was run yesterday in perfect contest conditions. The surf was 3ft and clean and the sun shone all day.

Spectators were treated to some great surfing especially from U14 irish Champion Gearoid Mcdaid whose vertical surfing was in a class above all the other competitors, Gearoid who has travelled up from Sligo at 5am was putting together big off the lips and solid roundhouse cutbacks, much to the enjoyment of the spectators.

The day saw some other great battles in the surf in the 1st round local srfers James Doherty and Paul Mcguckin pushed each other until the end of the heat with James narrowly beating Paul after a judges countback.

Heat2 of round 1 saw two of the fianlists Gearoid and Oisin push local surfer Luke Daly into 3rd and the repercharge.

The Semi finals saw some great surfing with Gearoid getting an 8.5 from all the judges, Luke daly who won the repercharge heat, showed his local knowledge and snagged the best sets with nice long rides and big manouveres all the way to the inside.

Meanwhile it was a battle of young versus old with Oisin Cambell from the CCSC & Fanad surfer Paddy Blaney up against Paul Mcguckin and local surf instructor Iain Gilmour in the second semi final. But it was young OisinCambell who just pipped contest veteran Iain Gilmour into 2nd.

The final was held in perfect waves with the two youngsters Mcdaid and Cambell up against the local Fanad surfer Daly and Gilmour. All 4 surfers caught a high number of waves and all scoring highly on them but the day went to Young Gearoid Mcdaid who took 1st place with Oisin Cambell 2nd, Iain Gilmour 3rd, and Luke Daly 4th.

The club would like to thank Adventure One Surf School, for sponsoring the prizes and Trophies and all the competitors and supporters who made the effort and were rewarded with a great day of surf and sun in North Donegal.

The next comp in the mini tour is Nov 6th In Portrush 'The Clash of the Clubs'.

N.W.S.C Surf Tour 2010

The N.W.S.C is running a new mini surf tour with 3 events starting with the 'Clash of the Clubs' in Portrush on October 23rd this is being run in conjunction with the C.C.S.C. Then on Oct 3oth is the Cold Water Classic sponsored by Adventure One Surf School at Ballyheirnan Bay, in Fanad. The Final event is on November 13th at Culdaff and is the 4th annual 'Wildstyle' contest sponsored by Rosy Surf n Skate.

All events have just one Open Division and points will be gained by surfers towards becoming Tour champion! There will also be a trophy for the N.W.S.C Club champion for the highest placed club member on the tour after all 3 events.

All competitors must be either ISA/NWSC members to enter, membership is available on the day!

On the 29th Nov take part in the Expression Session. Surfers in the water will judge the best wave of the day and the King will be crowned.

NWSC Sponsored Paddle Raised €1145

North West Surf Club held the paddle Port Salon event in choppy cross-shore conditions on 15 August 2009. Eight hardy surfers showed up to support the RNLI. They paddled the 2 ½ km in an average time of approximately 30 minutes.

This event raised a total of €1145 for the crucial work of the RNLI.

Special mention to top fundraisers Daniel Gill and Thomas Kerr!
Later in the day everyone reconvened to show further support for the RNLI at the Surfism event in Sandinos, Derry.

The NWSC's Second competition of the year is planned for 3^rd/4tth October. Sponsored by Rosy Surfboards. This CLASSIC event will be held at Culdaff Donegal and is located 8km north of Carndonagh to the north of the Inishowen peninsula

Culdaff Beach Clean up

Hi Fellow Surf Guy’s & Girls,
The North West Surf Club is having a beach clean up this year at Culdaff on the 31st May at 10am.
We would like to encourage a ll members and non members or any one who would like to take part in the beach clean up to come along and help out on the 31st May. We will provide bags, gloves etc..
If you just take a good hard look around your local surf spot I'am sure you will see how bad it is getting. Surfers are getting allot of bad press for all this rubbish, but as you are aware some of it comes from other factors but surfers themselves are not without blame. Even if you cant make the beach clean please take you rubbish home or lift some litter at the beach and take with you to dispose of correctly it all helps.

Hopefully the weather will be nice and we might get some Sun The North West Surf Club will be putting on a BBQ and hopefully a free surf.

NWSC Spring Classic

The North West Surf Club held its first contest of 2009 last weekend at Fanad , North Donegal. The conditions that greeted competitors on Saturday morning were big horrible and onshore!
The organisers decided to move the contest to a near by sheltered beach and as the day progressed the wind dropped to produce perfect conditions for the finals at the end of the day.

Some of the country's top surfers were in attendance and proceeded to show why they are the best! Andrew Mennie and Ronan Oertzen were both finalists at this years Irish Championships,and wowed the spectators by pulling off some spectacular moves including airs and 360's to make it through to the open Final. Local Letterkenny surfer Barry Daly also surfed consistently well and used his local knowledge to progress through to the open final.

The Junior Final was an exciting heat with Derry surfer Aaron Dees picking off the best waves to take the heat !

The Longboard final was held later in the day in cleaner conditions. Fanad surf school owner Iain Gilmour took the lead right from the hooter, putting together some excellent rides, that included long noserides and drop knee cutbacks. That meant the race for 2nd place was on and it was a tight a fair with young John McGuckin from Downpatrick , Josh Enslie and Lewis Waterworth battling it out. John McGuckin snagged a great ride at the end to just take 2nd place, leaving Josh 3rd and Lewis 4th.

However it was the open final that was the highlight of the day, with all three surfers getting fantastic waves ! But it was Andrew and Ronan's vast contest experience that showed through as they traded wave for wave, in head high glassy conditions, both pulling off big scoring rides .

Ballyheirnan Bay in Fanad

The NWSC's first competition of the year is planned for 28/29 March. Sposored by Liquid Surf Co. and the Blaney Hotel Group the SPRING CLASSIC will be held at Ballyheirnan Bay, Fanad, Co. Donegal.
The divisions will be Open, Ladies, Longboard & Junior. Beach Entries will be taken between 8am and 9:30am Only! With the first heats going in at 10am.

The cost of Entry is €10, any additional division you wish to enter will cost €5. All entrants must be ISA or NWSC members for insurance purposes. Club membership will be available on the day and is the same price as last year €25 Senior €20 Junior(under18).

For people who wish to stay close to the contest site the Blaney Hotel group is offering a reduced rate for competitors at the Milford Inn Hotel or the Silver Tassie Hotel. To book please contact the hotels direct, for contact details go to www.theblaneyhotelgroup.com.

While we have people at the event the club will hold its AGM on the Saturday night probably at the Milford Inn (This will be confirmed on the day). We would ask as many members as possible to attend as this is your chance to vote in a new Committee and also put forward ideas for events the club could run in 2009.

Directions from Letterkenny:
At the "Pole Star Roundabout"(circular sculpture made of telegraph poles)take the 3rd exit for Ramelton/Milford on the R245.

Continue to the village of Ramelton approx. 7 miles, then follow thesigns for Milford approx 8 miles from Ramelton. 1/2 a mile after the"Milford Inn" take the right turn for Kerrykeel on the R246.

Continue to the village of Kerrykeel approx 4 miles (Our shop AdventureOne Surf Supplies is located here).

Once in Kerrykeel turn left past "Paddy Mors pub" and follow the shoreroad North along the banks of Mulroy Bay for about 2 miles.

Just after the "Donegal Creameries" the road forks, take the left handfork down the hill and up the other side.

Continue on the R246 through the village of Rossnakill and on to the village of Tamney or Tawney on some maps.

Here take the left turn opposite "Clinton's Gala shop" and follow theshore road again past "Massmount Chapel" on your left.

Keep going straight along the R246 for approx 3 miles through Kindrum and past "Fanvolty Chapel" on your right, here the road gets quite bendy,carry on past the "Fanad Lodge Pub" on your left.

Just after this pub the road bends to the right and you will see our bluesign "SURF SCHOOL OPEN" turn left here, it is also the entrance for "Eelburn Caravan park".

Follow the short track to the beach carpark where you will see our Red van.

"The North West Surf Club held its annual 'Wildstyle Competition' at
Pollan Bay, Ballyliffen in Inishowen, Co. Donegal. As like last year there
were two divisions 'Novice' and 'Open', and surfers could ride whatever
type of board they liked.

The event started in heavy rain with offshore 2-3ft waves on the reef at
Ballyliffen, some strong early performances from Jim Lenfsty, Tony Doherty
and Kieron Scallion made for some exciting 1st round heats.

As the day progressed the wind swung around to the NW and conditions
became more difficult.

The Open final was moved to further down the beach as the tide had dropped
and was held in solid over head waves, with some excellent surfing from
the four surfers including local surfer's Sean Mclaughlin and Iain Gilmour
who was riding a single fin fish. But it was Jim Lenfsty, last year's
runner up who put in a powerful performance to take this years Final.

The club would like to thank all the competitors and spectators for turing
out in such horrible weather, and Ocean Warriors in Portrush for
sponsoring the prizes.

Travelling from Derry (and Belfast) the quickest route is to cross the Foyle Bridge then take the A2 towards Moville, turning off for Carndonagh at Quigley's Point/Carrowkeel. Ballyliffin is 6 miles (10 km) beyond Carndonagh.

From Letterkenny or Rosapenna take the R238 through Buncrana. At Cockhill Church (outside Buncrana) take a left over the bridge for Clonmany. At ?The North Pole? Pub 5 miles after Buncrana keep left for Clonmany/Ballyliffin. Entering Clonmany (at the Centra Shop), make a right turn for Ballyliffin. Polan Bay is located about 2 mile from Clonmany

So we don’t want to see any waterworks outside of this closed door event like last year because you failed to get a ticket. If you don’t have one, it will be a sad state of affairs listening to the mighty Craic from outside a wooden door!

Tickets are limited to 250 people maximum and all others will not see the other side of the door, no matter how much you can hear the band! So, unless you plan on hearing about “Legends” again this year, ya better bank one now! No more than 250 will be sold.

Level 1 Judging

The Irish Surfing Association will host a Level 1 Judging Course at 12.30pm on Feb 2nd 2008 at the Ballyshannon Leisure Centre, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal. The course will be presented by International judge Pascal Devine.
Any body interested in doing the course and is an ISA member. Its a four hour course for anybody with an interest in judging. To book please forward your name to nwsurfclub@googlemail.com and I will forward them on to Zoe.

‘Driven’ Big Wave premiere at Derry event

Surfism – Driven Premiere
Sandinos, 25th October.

I'm not sure if you are aware but a documentary based around my friend and I has been produced over the last few years, called 'DRIVEN'. We held three invitational screenings(for surf shops and media) across England and Northern Ireland and have organised our next and final screening in Londonderry/derry at Sandinos Cafe on thursday 25th October. It is open to the public. Both of us will be there along with the film maker Anthony Butler to answer any questions you might have about the film or what we have been doing.

The screening will take place at 10pm. The door charge of £3 will cover venue costs and the film will last 50min

Local surfers are delighted to hear that the public premiere of a remarkable film about Irish surf will take place at Surfism on 25th October. ‘Driven’ is the big wave documentary story of Causeway surfer Al Mennies and his mate Cotty’s assault on Aileens. Aileens is the new big wave spot in Co clare, and since it was first surfed only a few years back, it has steadily become a global mecca for surfers seeking insane waves in the 40 foot plus category. Both men trained hard for the day when finally a jet ski would tow them into one of the great waves on planet earth. The film also provides a unique insight into a dramatic rescue, after it appeared to onlookers that they were in serious danger as a huge wave engulfed Cotty. The story made the national news at the time. Commenting, Alistair Mennie said:

“Driven came about through years of surfing and having a passion for surfing and finding bigger and bigger waves. I knew for years that these sort of waves existed of our coastline and now we are riding them on a regular basis. Now that it has been proved that waves as big as can be found anywhere in the world exist of our shores, the only question left to be answered is how big can it get. Cotty and I are both excited about screening the film in the North West and are looking forward to the night in Sandinos”.

Surfism events have already helped Magee student Shauna Ward compete at the World Surf Championships in California. The event also drew a huge crowd to support Letterkenny teenager Alan Dohertys campaign for facial surgery. Surfism draws on the talents and interests of local artists and surfers in an easy going, friendly atmosphere. Organiser, Radio Foyle’s Mark Patterson edits the BBC online surf platform. He said:

“Alistair, or Big Al as he has become known, is a legend in the Irish surf scene. He is one of the very few locals who have gone to other global big wave spots and lived to tell the tale. As it happens, Aileens has been found in Als own surfing backyard, and its only appropriate that the first film to come out about this insane place focuses on the success of a local surfer. People will simply not believe the size of the waves in this film. It’s like surfing off the top of the Guildhall. Were also delighted that Alistair himself will be there on the night”

NORTH WEST SURF CLUB CONTEST

The North West Surf Club held its first competition last weekend 22nd September in Inishowen. There was a good size entry for the event with surfers travelling from Dublin to attend it.

The event started off in shoulder size waves in glorios sunshine and afairly strong offshore wind, which made the 1st rounds difficult for many surfers.

However as the day progressed the event moved to Ballyiffin reef for the semi finals of the open division. These were held in good 4ft surf and the competitors showed some outstanding surfing.

Irish team member Eoin McCarthy-Deering and Portrush surfer Jim Lenfesty put on a powerful display to both qualify for the final. As did loca lriders Shamus Harkin from Culdaff and Iain Gilmour of Fanad.

The Open final was held in superb conditions 3-4ft right handers peeled across the reef as McCathy-Deering and Lenfesty carried on their battle from the semis. Iain Gilmour and Seamus Harkin managed to get some goodrides too but it was not enough to catch the others. In the endMccarthy-Deering caught the highest scoring wave of the day on his penultimate wave which sealed his victory.

The N.W.S.C would like to take this opportunity to thank the sponsor ofthe prizes, Liquid Surf shop in Derry and the Christian Surfers of Ireland for supplying their marquee and hot drinks to everyone. Iain Gilmour adventure one surf school.
